Abstract

This study aims to understand the reproductive status of the breeding bull and the herd, along with management and feeding practices. Bulls of European, Zebu, and crossbred beef breeds were evaluated through clinical-andrological examinations, including: scrotal circumference (SC), length and width of the testicles, using a flexible measuring tape, and assessment of their consistency and mobility. The vesicular glands were evaluated for size, shape, and consistency through rectal palpation. In several Brazilian states, there are laws making andrological examination mandatory for all bulls participating in agricultural exhibitions, fairs, and auctions. Following the example of these states, this examination should be mandatory in Santa Catarina; for this, the rural caucus of the Legislative Assembly of Santa Catarina should propose a bill establishing such a requirement. This measure will undoubtedly provide an undeniable boost to the genetic improvement of the Santa Catarina herd, consequently leading to a significant increase in herd productivity and contributing to the state's self-sufficiency in meat production.
