Agricultural Research in Santa Catarina: 50 Years of History

2025-09-12

In 2025, agricultural research will celebrate its 50th anniversary in Santa Catarina. To understand the importance of this work, we must look back at history. Since 1975, research has been benefiting Santa Catarina's rural producers. The creation of the Santa Catarina Agricultural Research Company (Empasc) was a milestone in the history of research in Santa Catarina.

Current productivity rates are not a coincidence, but the result of years of work that combines knowledge, technology, and sustainability and has been transforming rural areas in the state.

The modernization of Santa Catarina's agriculture is largely a result of Epagri's technology portfolio, which includes programs developed in several areas: aquaculture, fishing, fruitculture, grains, horticulture, and livestock.

The technologies generated remain aligned with public policies and are present in the field and at sea. Rice and apple cultivars, shellfish cultivation systems, and efficiently and healthily produced honey, milk, and meat are examples that drive production chains and are a hit with consumers.

The science of the future will need to handle large volumes of data, conduct simulations, and make decisions in real time, in addition to generating new discoveries and forms of collaboration.

This edition of RAC also addresses relevant aspects of agricultural production, featuring a series of articles aimed at reducing phytosanitary problems that have negatively affected the development and productivity of Santa Catarina's crops, such as the incidence of insects in soybean crops in the Midwest, whitefly and blackfly infestations in citrus farming, and the control of diseases such as black and yellow sigatoka in organic banana production.
