Weed management by allelopathy
Keywords:
plant interference, allelochemicals, reduction of herbicide use, natural herbicidesAbstract
The allelopathy has an important contribution to integrated weed management, by reducing herbicide
dependence. Allelochemicals compounds were identified and their use in agriculture were elucidated. The knowledge on allelopathy can help the selection of plant species that constitute the crop rotation scheme. Moreover, there is the
possibility of using the allelochemicals produced by plants as natural herbicides that possess minor impact to the environment and to the human health. However, some natural herbicides may be as toxic to the environment and to the human health as synthetic herbicides. In addition, very often the natural herbicides show minor efficiency on
weed control than the synthetics.
