Huanglongbing and the citrus sedllings production in Santa Catarina

The citrus nursery sector in Santa Catarina has experienced considerable expansion in recent years with an increase in the number of nursery plants produced and also in the number of families involved in the activity. According to the Plant
Health Agency of Santa Catarina State - Cidasc the number of nursery plants in the 2012/2013 season raised from 629,428 units to more than 1.8 million in the 2021/2022 harvest. The activity is practiced by small family producers, mainly in the Alto
Vale do Rio Itajaí region. The imposition of regulatory requirements in the production of nursery plants, both at the federal and state levels, promoted numerous improvements in the different stages of production with a significant increase in the quality
of nursery plants and the conquest of new markets. An important milestone was reached with the fulfillment of the order (Portaria SAR n° 22 de 23/11/2010), which established the end of the production of nursery plants in the open field and the
mandatory adoption of the protected environment. With the detection of HLB in the state, the nursery sector is facing a new challenge: to contain the spread of the disease, keeping the seedling production area under continuous monitoring.
