Strategic use of herbicide in Tifton 85 pasture

The overseeding of winter forages onto summer perennial species is a common practice in subtropical pastoral environments. However, competition between species can limit the full establishment of winter crops. One strategy to overcome this problem may be the strategic use of herbicides. The aim of this study was to determine a dose of glyphosate herbicide that limits the development of Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.) during the winter without compromising its recovery in the following spring. The treatments comprised five glyphosate dosages, with the dose of 2.77Kg ha-1 considered as the full dose (100%), and the remaining four treatments corresponding to 75, 50, 25, and 0% of the full dose. The treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design with three replications per treatment. The use of up to 25% of the full dose (0.69Kg ha-1 of glyphosate) does not increase the incidence of invasive plants compared to the treatment with no herbicide application. Doses of up to 1.39Kg ha-1 of glyphosate do not compromise the resumption of Tifton 85 tillering in the spring compared to the control treatment.
