Abstract

Rural development approaches called systemic, participatory, and sustainable have not shown significant changes in relation to previous strategies. As a result, the results are making little difference. In which, development is seen as the result of an intervention planned from the outside in and centered on the adoption of technologies. There is an effort to change and improve the methods used, combating old paradigms.

Author Biographies

Sérgio Leite Guimarães Pinheiro

Possui graduação em Agronomia pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (1981), mestrado em Agronomia - Lincoln University (1987) e doutorado em Desenvolvimento Rural Sustentável - The University of Sydney (1997). Atualmente é professor participante da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) e pesquisador da Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina (EPAGRI), locado na Gerência de Planejamento e Articulação Técnica. Coordena o Projeto de Pesquisa, Extensão e Aprendizado Participativo (PEAP) e o Projeto de Desenvolvimento Territorial Sustentável na Zona Costeira de Santa Catarina (DTS Zona Costeira). Atua principalmente nos seguintes temas: desenvolvimento rural, desenvolvimento territorial sustentável, agroecologia, agricultura familiar, pesquisa participativa e abordagem sistêmica.

Shankar Chamala, Faculty of Land and Food Systems, The University of Queensland

Dr. Chamala tinha um diploma de bacharel em ciências agrícolas pela Osmania University e mestrado e doutorado em ciências agrícolas pelo Indian Agricultural Research Institute. Ele começou sua carreira em 1963 como um extensionista no Indian Council of Agricultural Research e posteriormente trabalhou no India's Council of Scientific Industrial Research, National Council of Education and Research, Small Industry Extension Training Institute. Ele também teve um período como pesquisador de audiência em rádio e televisão. Foi recrutado para a University of Queensland em 1972 pelo Dr. Joan Tully.
