Sigatoka monitoring by the biological forecasting system in the subtropical climate of Santa Catarina

Santa Catarina state is an important banana producer in Brazil. Due to sigatoka disease complex several fungicide sprays are necessary to control this leaf disease. The adoption of biological forecasting system has assisted banana growers in decisions regarding the time of making a new fungicide spray. Pre-warning systems aim to maximize sigatoka control through minimum fungicide spray. Since Epagri adapted this pre-warning system to Santa Catarina coast conditions, and its adoption by banana producers, it is estimated a reduction of at least two fungicides sprays every production season in the subtropical conditions of the state, leading to positive technical, environmental, epidemiological, and economical impacts. This paper describes the practice of monitoring the biological pre-warning and its impacts on banana cultivation in Santa Catarina state, Brazil.
