Abstract

Some unusual foods, such as industrial byproducts and wastes, can be used as alternative sources of carbohydrates and protein to ruminants, providing enough nutrients for milk production as well as some reduction in feed costs. The composition and nutritional value of these foods can vary considerably, so it is advisable to seek more information before you use or recommend it. The decision to use certain food, whether or not alternative food, is up to the producer with the aid of an appropriate specialist. Among the decision criteria, attention to the availability of food in the region, the cost, the nutritional composition and the water content are very important ones. This article aims to make a brief review of some alternative foods that can feed dairy cattle.
