Abstract

The spatial arrangement of common bean plants is a function of the plant density and row width, and
can affect the grain yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of plant density and row width on the grain yield in two common bean genotypes with distinct growth habits (IPR Uirapuru and Costa Rica), in environmental conditions of the North Plateau of Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Two experiments were carried out in the seasons 2004/05 and 2005/06. Two row width (0,3 and 0,5m) and four plant densities (150, 250, 350 and 450
thousand plants/ha) were used as treatments. In both seasons, the reduction of row width from 0,5 to 0,3m promoted significant yield improvement. The grain yield was not affected by plant densities.
