Between the months of June and August 2020, the Brazilian media reported, with great prominence, the occurrence of "locust clouds" in displacement over the territories of Argentina and Paraguay. The reports warned of the high capacity of the “clouds” to destroy plantations and, consequently, the impact on agriculture in the affected regions, as well as the rapid displacement and the risk of invasion into Brazilian territory by the border with the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. This news caused fear to the population, especially to the farmers, since the “locust clouds” reached about 150 kilometers from the border with Brazil, close to the city of Uruguaiana, in Rio Grande do Sul. The grasshopper registered in Argentina is of the species Schistocerca cancellata (Orthoptera: Acrididae), popularly known as "South American grasshopper".
