Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate the initial growth of different plant species in order to
select those that can be used as bioindicators of herbicides imazapyr + imazapic in water. The species evaluated were: radish, tomato, cucumber, sorghum, common beans, and rice (Cypress CL, IRGA 422 CL and IRGA 417). The experiment was accomplished using the floating system for seedling production. The following herbicide concentrations were tested: control, 1, 10, 100, and 1,000 g/L of BAS 714 GD (imazapyr + imazapic). The parameters
evaluated included dry weight biomass, root length and plant height at seven and 14 days. All the species and rice cultivars tested showed injured symptoms due to the herbicide residue in water. The best species to detect imazapyr + imazapic residue in water were rice, cvs. IRGA 417 and IRGA 422 CL, radish, cucumber, tomato and sorghum. These species are sensitive to the herbicides even at the minimum tested concentrantions specially at
14 DAS.
