Abstract

Leaves and new branches of Paraguay tea Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil. (Aquifoliaceae) are processed
to produce teas and other products and are an important agro-industrial activity in Southern Brazil. In 2005, borer larvae occurrence was observed in twigs of Paraguay tea plants in Chapecó, producing twig swelling and shoot death. Adults of this insect created in laboratory were determined as Parastenopa sp. (Diptera, Tephritidae),
being this the first register of this pest on Paraguay tea plants in Santa Catarina State, Brazil.
