Abstract
Local cultivars of cassava and from different states and countries have been tested in field trials in
Santa Catarina State, Brazil, since 1975. In 1988 a program on breeding cassava cultivars was started, with the genotype SCS 252 Jaguaruna getting the best performance. This new cultivar presents high crop yield, good starch content, resistance to bacterial blight and to anthracnose, white root pulp, vigorous stem and smooth roots, among
other characteristics. The new cultivar was tested and approved through the participatory research methodology by hundreds of cassava growers in different regions in Santa Catarina State.
