        Abstract

The experiment was conducted at Epagri/Estação Experimental de Ituporanga. Fifteen news
genotypes of elephantgrass were evaluated under grazing. Local cultivars Roxo and Mott were used as control. Genotypes were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications and evaluated during november/2001-june/2002 trough five grazings. Differences among genotypes were found regarding to plant height,
basal and aerial tillering, total and leaf dry matter production, leaf/stem ratio and animal preference. The new genotypes were not superior in leaf dry matter production compared to ‘Roxo’. Genotypes CNPGL92 F190.1 and CNPGL93 F06.1 were better accepted by animals than ‘Roxo’. The dwarf genotype CNPGL92 F198.7 distinguished
by good productivity, high animal preference and better overgrazing tolerance than ‘Mott’.
