    Abstract

The mussel Mytlus galloprovincialis is an invasive species in several countries. In Santa Catarina, this species has been observed in mussel farms since 2016, initially in the municipality of Bombinhas, and less frequently in other places with
mollusk production. In this scientific note, we present the results of a preliminary survey of the presence of this mussel in the South Bay of Florianópolis Island, the main mussel-producing region in the state. The results show the presence of M. galloprovincialis in frequencies ranging from 11.2% to 77.4%, with an average of 40% (± 21). The note compliments this
information with recommendations for applied research efforts to manage the dispersion of the invasive species, associated with management techniques on farms, in order to reduce the economic and social impact on mariculture in Santa Catarina.
