          Abstract

Data loggers with sensors for salinity were installed in five sites in the North and South Bays, at 1.5 and at three meters depth. These sites were monitored during an event of intense rain when, in four days, almost twice the average rainfall expected for the whole month of September was registered. Salinities at 1.5 meter depth were lower than at three meters depth, in three of five monitored sites. The implications of such results for the shellfish aquaculture are discussed, based on the depths of the aquaculture areas established by the Brazilian government in the State of Santa Catarina.
