          Abstract

For two successive years, budburst inductors were tested in ‘SCS444 Nicoleto’ peach tree in Pedras Grandes, SC, Brazil.
The treatments were: T1 – untreated control; T2 - hydrogenated cyanamide; T3 – nitrogen foliar fertilizer; T4 – Ca(NO3)2; T5 – nitrogen foliar fertilizer + Ca(NO3)2; T6 – garlic extract; T7 – garlic extract + Ca(NO3)2. In the first year, a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the number of open flowers and post-thinning fructification was observed in treatments T2, T3, T5 and T7 compared to the control. In the first year, no significant differences were observed in the effective fruiting of the seven treatments. However, in the second year, with lower hibernal temperatures, a significant decrease in effective fructification was observed in treatments T2, T3, T4 and T5, which were the ones that most anticipated vegetative budbreak. It was found that, in the
second year, the greater the number of vegetative buds opened during flowering (due to this anticipation), the lower was the post-thinning fructification (R = − 0.94; p < 0.01), indicating a competition between the reproductive and vegetative organs. In both years, significant synergistic effects were observed between the garlic extract and Ca(NO3)2 over the bud break.
