Cover crops dry mass and mycorrhizal activity in an organic no-tillage vegetable system

Authors

Abstract

The use of cover crops is essential in the no-tillage vegetable system (NTVS) and promotes improvements on the system, especially with organic management. However, whether or not these plants associate with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can alter soil fungal activity and system yield.  We aimed to evaluate the effect of black oats and oilseed-radish on dry mass and mycorrhizal activity in organic NTVS. We quantified the dry matter production of the cover crops (yield), arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization of the cover crops, mycorrhizal fungal spores, and protein content related to soil glomalin fractions under the influence of two treatments: black oat (mycorrhizal) and oilseed-radish (non-mycorrhizal). Black oats showed 42, 27, and 12% for total colonization, by arbuscules and by vesicles, respectively, and differed from oilseed-radish, which showed no colonization. The other variables did not differ between treatments. The results observed reinforce the importance of crop diversity (previous history of the area) in maintaining soil biological functionality and indicate that the eventual inclusion of non-mycorrhizal species in diversified systems does not necessarily compromise the mycorrhizal potential of the soil, allowing greater flexibility for the farmer in choosing cover crops
