Abstract
The new cassava cultivar designated SCS256 Cigana was developed through open-pollinated crosses using the maternal genotype Azulona. The rigorous selection process, initiated in 2008, primarily emphasized genetic tolerance to bacterial blight (Xanthomonas phaseolis pv. manihotis), combined with a high capacity for photoassimilate partitioning into starch and phenotypic stability. The cultivar was evaluated in five strategic and representative municipalities of cassava-growing regions in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil (Agronômica, Jaguaruna, Sangão, Sombrio, and Trombudo Central). The assessments demonstrated that the new cultivar SCS256 Cigana exhibits high tuberous root yield and elevated industrial performance, both in harvests conducted after a single growing cycle (eight to ten months) and after two growing cycles (eighteen to twenty months). The cultivar stands out for desirable morpho-agronomic traits, including an upright shoot architecture (facilitating crop management and mechanization), ease of uprooting and root detachment due to the presence of a peduncle, and moderate resistense to soil-borne pathogens such as Fusarium solani. Additionally, it shows non-preference for infestation by whiteflies and shoot flies. The cultivar SCS256 Cigana is officially registered in the Brazilian National Cultivar Registry (RNC) under number 53015 and represents a high-impact technology for the cassava flour and starch industries, ensuring profitability, sustainability, and production predictability across the cassava value chain in Santa Catarina.
