            Abstract

Morphologic and physiologic characteristics of common bean plants can affect their competitive ability with weeds.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the competitive ability of “Carioca” common bean cultivars with weeds. Initially an
experiment was carried out in 2010/11 crop season, in Papanduva, SC, to verify the variability of some plant characteristics
among cultivars of “Carioca” common bean. The randomized block design was used, with four replications. The treatments
were seven cultivars: SCS 202 Guará, BRS Horizonte, IPR Juriti, Pérola, IPR Siriri, IPR Saracura e FTS Magnífico. At 6, 14, 18, 25
and 32 days after emergence (DAE) were evaluated: plant height, ground cover by common bean plants; dry weight of stems
and leaves; and grain yield. In the crop season 2011/12 the same cultivars were grown in the presence or absence of weeds,
adopting similar methodology as the 2010/11. There was a positive correlation between productivity loss due to interference
and dry matter accumulation by weeds. It was not possible to identify a common bean plant characteristic to estimate the grain
yield loss due to weed interference.
