Abstract

The selecton of the Cavendish subgroup of banana cultvars looks for productve plants with less height, good quality of fruits and improved resistance to pests and diseases. Thus Santa Catarina Rural Extension and Agricultural Research Agency (Epagri) has been selectng superior banana clones with one or more of these traits, using the diversity which results from mutaton induced naturally from the State subtropical climate. This study resulted in the selecton of SC452 Corupá cultvar, which, compared to Nanicão, from which it originated, presents 20% shorter plants, which facilitates plant management, disease control, harvest and wind protecton, besides allowing larger plant populaton density.
