Abstract

The objectives of this study were to compare the farmers evaluations of bean lines and cultivars
with traditional evaluations, as well as to verify the correlation among technician and farmer evaluations. It was carried out at Epagri/Experiment Station of Canoinhas, in a crop and use value (VCU) experiment of black bean in the season 2004/05. Six farmers and five technicians experienced in common bean crop evaluated the genotypes.
There were strong agreement among visual evaluations made by farmers and technicians, and these evaluations are, in general, correlated with traditional evaluations used in breeding program. However, for grain yield, the visual evaluation was only efficient to identify the genotypes that had low yield potential. The genotype CNPF
7762 received the highest scores in the participative evaluation.
