Performance evaluation of hybrid Africanized and Italian bee colonies

This study aimed to: • Verify the influence of bee race on the laying capacity of Africanized and Italian queens; • Verify the pollen and honey storage capacity of Africanized and Italian hybrid bee colonies. In this study, although the food flow conditions where the experimental apiary was installed did not reflect the ideal conditions for honey and pollen production, it was observed that Africanized and Italian bees showed the same performance in terms of brood quantity, which should determine a similar size in the adult bee population between these two bee races. However, when comparing performance in terms of average comb areas occupied with honey and pollen, it was found that Africanized bees are more efficient than Italian hybrid bees in storing these types of food.
