Protein salt, technology for livestock in high-altitude fields

Abstract

The technology of protein-enriched salt in Santa Catarina was developed by Epagri at the Lages Experimental Station to improve the zootechnical indicators of cattle herds in regions prone to frost, especially in native pastures. The main objective of using protein-enriched salt is to supply the nitrogen deficiency of rumen bacteria, which are capable of extracting energy from the pasture ingested by cattle through the fermentation process. When used, protein-enriched salt promotes increased forage consumption and greater nutrient intake, reversing a situation of body weight loss to maintenance or small gains. Studies on protein-enriched salt began in 1984 and culminated in 1995 with the development of the technology known as Bock Salt, widely used by livestock farmers in the Southern Plateau of Santa Catarina and other regions of southern Brazil. For the effective use of protein-enriched salt, some management practices are necessary, from an adaptation phase to weighing the animals at the beginning and end of the utilization period. By benefiting the rumen microbiota and promoting better utilization of frost-damaged pastures, the use of protein salt also indirectly contributes to reducing native field fires, an important environmental benefit that is widely questioned by society.
