SCS374 Litorânea: new loose leaf lettuce cultivar selected in the organic production system

Abstract

The lettuce cultivar SC374 Litorânea results from a long study of the cultivar Empasc 357 Litoral. Since 2008, under organic management system, researchers from Epagri assessed and selected lettuce strains presenting higher yield, flavor, physiological quality, early bolting, and diseases tolerance. Experiments were conducted in the Itajaí Experimental Station of Epagri. Additionally, representative farmers and vegetable producers were selected to evaluate promissory strains. Concluding the study, the cultivar SCS374 Litorânea was selected, presenting in average plants with 40cm of diameter, 312 grams of weight, 44 leaves per plant and 7 days of early bolting tolerance and less susceptibility to downy mildew, when compared with other cultivars. SCS374 Litorânea has been registered (RNC 36084) in the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA).

    Possui graduação em Agronomia pela Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (2006), atuando principalmente na área de fitopatologia e microbiologia. Mestre em Fitotecnia pela Universidade Estadual do Centro-Oeste do Paraná (2010), trabalhando com melhoramento do morangueiro e marcadores moleculares. Doutor em Fitotecnia pela Universidade Federal de Lavras, atuando na área de melhoramento de hortaliças, com ênfase na cultura do tomateiro e estresses ambientais. Foi bolsista PNPD pela Universidade Federal do Paraná, trabalhando com resistência de fitopatógenos a fungicidas. Atualmente é pesquisador da Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina- Epagri, atuando na área de olericultura na Estação Experimental de Itajaí-EEI. As principais linhas de pesquisa hoje são: melhoramento de cultivares de alface e tomate para o sistema orgânico; manejo de plantas no sistema hidropônico e semi-hidropônico; automação de baixo custo para a olericultura catarinense.
