Phenology and thermal demand of olive cultivars in a humid subtropical climate: 2023/24 cycle in Rancho Queimado, SC

Authors

Abstract

Olive growing has expanded into non-traditional regions, such as southern Brazil, where the microclimatic variability of Santa Catarina favors cultivar adaptation. This study evaluated the flowering of five olive cultivars (Arbequina, Arbosana, Grappolo, Koroneiki, and Picual) in Rancho Queimado, Santa Catarina, during the 2023/24 cycle, considering the duration of phenological stages and thermal and chilling requirements. ‘Arbequina’ stood out for its greater earliness, beginning flowering in July, while full flowering occurred between September and early October for most cultivars. ‘Picual’ required lower thermal accumulation to complete flowering, indicating good local adaptation. ‘Arbequina’ also showed lower chilling requirements. The average temperature was 15°C, with high relative humidity and precipitation throughout the period. The results highlight relevant differences among cultivars, supporting the selection of materials better adapted to olive growing in Santa Catarina.
