Abstract
Cassava crop (Manihot esculenta Crantz) holds significant economic and social relevance for small-scale growers in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and Brazil in general. In addition to registered materials, several other regional cultivars currently in production and well-accepted for consumption lack technical information and proper identification by the cassava growers. The main objectives of this study were the morphological characterization, the evaluation of yield, and the occurrence of root rots in five regional cassava cultivars. In Experiment 1, morphological descriptors were characterized for the cultivars ‘Polpa Amarela’, ‘Pessegueira’, ‘Vassourinha’, ‘Casca Roxa’, and ‘Eucalipto’ to facilitate their identification by producers. In Experiment 2, field trials were conducted (except for the ‘Eucalipto’ cultivar) to evaluate yield and the occurrence of root rots after eight months of cultivation in clay soil. The morphological characterization of leaves, petioles, shoots, stems, and tuberous roots should significantly contribute to the identification of these cultivars by growers. In the production trials, the yield (t ha-1) for the cultivars ‘Pessegueira’, ‘Casca Roxa’, ‘Polpa Amarela’, and ‘Vassourinha’, in descending order, were: 53.5, 48.4, 38.7, and 33.2, respectively. ‘Polpa Amarela’ cultivar was the most affected by root rots, reaching an average rate of 37.0%. The other cultivars maintained an average of 15.0% to 20.0% of rots. The results will provide support for producers in identifying cultivars and, if they desired, encourage the production of those best adapted and most productive for local and/or regional climate and soil conditions.
